Tips for Stree-Free Travel with Kids

April 01, 2015
Kids. They may be small in size, yet their stuff could fill a jumbo jet. But with these tips, air travel with kids can actually be easy(ish). Pack smarter and you can kiss the expense of too many checked bags goodbye! Not to mention the backache from all the carrying. Pack really smart and you might even make the trip enjoyable(ish) for all. And who knows, you may be able to read an entire chapter of that book you packed for yourself...maybe :)

Combine and conquer

Going away for a long weekend? Pack everyone’s clothes in one suitcase! Yep, we said it. One suitcase. How? Just place clothes inside a Ziploc® Space Bag® Suitcase bag, zip the bag closed, and roll out the air! Use one Space Bag® Suitcase bag per person to make unpacking much easier. Bonus: these bags are reusable, so you can use them again and again.

Personal packs of fun

Air travel = lots of waiting time. Your carry on can help with that! Pack personal “fun kits” (in an easy to reach place) to keep meltdowns to a minimum. A coloring book and new crayons, a mini toy plane, and stickers packed into a gallon size Ziploc® brand bag should do the trick for younger kids. For older children, pack a travel journal and some fun new pens in a quart size Ziploc® brand bag. A kid-friendly travel guide can also get them excited about your destination. And again, make sure to pack the kits on top of your carry on. The less awkwardly-digging-under-seat-while-keeping-apple-juice-cup-on-tray-upright-and-toddler-from-complete-meltdown, the better.

Stash a “just-in-case” bag (that you’ll totally have to use)

Between the baby’s spit up, your toddler’s runny nose, and your kindergartner’s orange juice, there’s a 99.9% chance you’re going to need a spare change of clothes. So pack one for all, including Mommy, since spilled grape juice doesn’t magically stop at the arm rest (sigh). Save space by using a Ziploc® brand Space Bag® for your just-in-case kit, and throw in a couple stain sticks, too—that way you have a fighting chance of removing those ketchup stains from your new white top.
