- 1 Tape off the area you’d like to turn into a chalkboard. Then, paint it with chalkboard paint. You may need to do several coats of paint, especially if the surface is glass or ceramic. Then, remove the tape and let the chalkboard paint dry for a few hours. Finally, write a message in chalk, and when you’re done, just wipe it away!
- 2 Tip: Feel free to experiment without ruining your expensive china. You can find cheap kitchen accessories at your local dollar store.

Make a prettier platter with a chalkboard serving tray! Pour holiday nut mixes into Ziploc® containers and label them with chalk so guests know what they’re munching on. This tray works great for cheese cubes, candies, and cookies too.
Custom Wine Glasses
Here’s an alternative to wine glass tags—just paint the base with chalkboard paint and add a design of your choice. We painted gold ornaments inspired by the Holiday Collection designs. Guests can write their names in chalk so no one ever picks up the wrong glass, and you can reuse them for the next party! These aren’t designed for the dishwasher, however. Then, fill a Ziploc® brand bag with cookies, White Chocolate Reindeer Chow, or other homemade goodies and use it to fill the mug for a delicious and practical treat.
Mini Dessert Tray
Update a wooden cake tray with chalkboard paint. Serve cookies, muffins, cupcakes, or spice cake and write a friendly message or label the flavor. Make a few of them and place them along the dinner table to provide a few different options for dessert.
Create a beautifully designed place setting with a chalkboard nametag for each guest. Just paint a tiny canvas with chalkboard paint and set it on a miniature easel. You can find these items in your local craft store in the doll or toy section. Check out our elegant table setting ideas for your next holiday dinner or brunch.
There might be too many cooks in the kitchen, but there are never too many spoons (or ladles…or spatulas). Make your own chalkboard utensil holder and round up everything you need for that big holiday feast. It’s a great way to store and display your DIY hand-painted spoons too!
Salt and Pepper Shakers
Customize your salt and pepper shakers with chalkboard paint for a fun duo to add to the dinner table. We used ornament designs inspired by the Holiday Collection, but you can paint whatever shape you’d like. You can also fill them with cinnamon, nutmeg, or confectionary sugar to serve with apple or pumpkin pie as a new twist on traditional shakers.
