Throwback Summer Games

July 01, 2014

Kids these days, with all their structured play and shiny computer games. It’s time you taught them how real games went down. Plus, the more games they know, the less they'll claim to be bored. Use #throwbacksummer to share your adventure.

Kick the can

Throwback Summer Games

A variation of hide and seek, but with the awesome addition of kicking a can. After learning this game, expect to hear plenty of “thunks” this summer.

What you need:

  • At least three kids
  • A can
  • The outdoors
  • A designated spot for the can
  • A designated spot for “jail”

Flashlight tag

Throwback Summer Games
Like Tag, the goal of the game is to escape an oh-so-terrible tag from “it”. But Flashlight tag takes it up a notch by being played at night. For little ones who are too afraid to play in the dark, dusk time flashlight tag is also very fun!

What you need:

  • At least 3 people
  • A flashlight
  • Trees and other obstacles

Jump rope

Throwback Summer Games
Ah, the days spent jumping rope on the playground. No wonder we were in such good shape. Whether jumping alone or in a group, we’ve collected 5 timeless rhymes to help you bring the joy of jump rope to your kids.

What you need:

  • 1-3 kids, depending on what you’re playing
  • 1-2 jump ropes, depending on what you’re playing

Four square

Throwback Summer Games
Kids of all ages will love playing this exciting game, including you. Once you’ve taught the rules, you’ll have a line of kids waiting to pounce. They’ll never look at a red rubber ball the same way again.

What you need:

  • 2-4 players
  • Chalk
  • A square court divided into four equal quadrants
  • An 8 ½-inch playground ball or a basketball.
